Volunteer Tax Assistance
1534 tax returns were filed in 2008 through our Volunteer Tax Assistance program, representing more than $915,000!Did you know that over $3 million in eligible tax return money goes unclaimed
each year in the Spartanburg community?!?
Many in our community don’t have access to affordable tax preparation services
or are unaware of programs like Earned Income Tax Credits that could put literally
thousands of dollars back in their hands and into our local economy.
Each year, United Way partners with the Upstate Workforce Investment Board, the
IRS, and other local organizations to provide free income tax preparation for
low-moderate income families and seniors in our community. Community volunteers
go through a training program and use online tax software provided by the IRS
to prepare these returns. During the spring of 2008, the Volunteer Tax Assistance
Initiative prepared over 1500 tax returns for local families, bringing back to
the community $915,000 in refunds that might not have been claimed. This included
832 standard returns and 702 returns for seniors seeking the economic stimulus
package.
Since its inception in 2004, Spartanburg County VITA has prepared over 2,200
tax returns and brought back $1.65 million in refunds and credits to individuals
in our community.
In 2009, we will have volunteer tax preparation sites in operation from January
15 through the end of tax season. All tax preparation is done by appointment only.
Volunteers set their own schedules and work as much or as little as they like!
